Cristina Pasaroiu

Soprano

Romanian soprano Cristina Pasaroiu has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, concert halls and festivals. Praised for her “highly intense stage and musical presence” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), she has been celebrated for her versatility, firmly establishing herself on the international operatic stage.

Cristina’s recent highlights have included her highly-acclaimed debut as Olympia/Antonia/Giulietta/Stella in a new production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and for Korea National Opera; Giorgetta/Lauretta/Suor Angelica in Il Trittico, Elisabetta in Don Carlo and Leonora in Il Trovatore for the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden; Alice Ford for the Bayerische Staatsoper München; Violetta for the Aalto Theater Essen; Mimì for the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Opéra de Nice; and her role debut as Marietta in Die Tote Stadt at the George Enescu Festival, marking the performance of her 45th operatic role, for which critics proclaimed her “a revelation” (Adevarul).

In the 2023/24 season, Cristina embarked on an extensive world tour alongside Andrea Bocelli, including Abu Dhabi, Al Ula, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Norway, Greece and Israel, continuing later this season to Barcelona, Belo Horizonte, Brasília and São Paulo. She can also be heard at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and in the title role in Rusalka at Opéra de Marseille. Cristina also continues to compose, perform and record her own music, under the alias AntoNetta, in a revolutionary project of which she is creator, composer and lead performer, mixing lyrical singing with electronic pop beats.

Puccini LA BOHÈME / Opéra de Nice

"Triumphant until the final applause, Cristina Pasaroiu's Mimi ... has all the vocal qualities of a lyric soprano, with a voice that is equal in all registers ... progressively delivers an admirable performance culminating in a final act which is overwhelming in its sincerity and the full mastery of her vocal resources."

Verdi FALSTAFF / Bayerische Staatsoper

"Soprano Cristina Pasaroiu sings Mrs. Alice Ford and matches Terfel's energy level impressively. I find her voice to have a great timbre, radiant and warm at the same time ... In the female quartets she brings a glowing vocal energy."

Frank Heublein, Klassik begeistert (October 2021)

Korngold DIE TOTE STADT / George Enescu Festival

"The soloist line-up is led by Romanian soprano Cristina Pasaroiu as Marietta. Her voice is poised and consistent. Her high notes are steady and sharp, with a sunny timbre. Her prosodic expression is immaculate and her vocal expression is dramatic ... The love duet with Paul is the pinnacle of her art, sung with great tenderness and musical sensitivity."

Vojin Jaglicic (September 2021)

Offenbach LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN / Deutsche Oper Berlin

"The star of the evening, though, is undoubtedly Cristina Pasaroiu, embodying all of Hoffmann’s loves. She pings out Olympia’s top notes fearlessly, is spirited as the Venetian courtesan Giulietta and finds moving lyrical warmth as the tragic Antonia, condemned to sing herself to death."

Hugo Shirley, Financial Times (December 2018)

"The star of the evening was unequivocally the young Romanian Cristina Pasaroiu in the four female roles of Stella, Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta. ... Pasaroiu possesses a first class lyric coloratura soprano, balanced in all registers. Whether in the clearly articulated Olympia aria, with floating, lightly-sung "Akuti", the dreamlike Antonia aria interpreted in an iridescent play of colours, or as the cynical courtesan Giulietta, she has every resource at her disposal not only to convince musically, but also to captivate as a character. ... She has in any case all the prerequisites for a great career: an exquisite vocal material reminiscent of the young Gheorghiu, a flawless technique, an already remarkable stage presence and a huge acting talent."

Dr. Ingobert Waltenberger, Online Merker (December 2018)

"Cristina Pasaroiu not only sings Olympia enchantingly, but also finds noble lyricism for Antonia and ultimately feigns false emotions very convincingly as Giulietta Hoffmann."

Frederik Hanssen, Tagesspiegel (December 2018)

Bizet CARMEN / Bregenzer Festspiele

"Although I would like to give special mention to Cristina Pasaroiu (Micaëla), who was also cheered effusively by the audience. Even at La Scala or in Vienna, the role could not be sung in a more beautiful or heart-rending way. A feast for the ears. Brava!"

Brava!"

Peter Bilsing, Der Opernfreund (July 2018)

Verdi DON CARLO / Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden

"Nevertheless there were enchanting moments in those scenes, as the protagonists revealed their deep emotional distress, with Cristina Pasaroiu being surprisingly magnificent as Elisabeth in the fourth act. Here she had found her format. Highly focused on the moment, she succeeded in a tender, high pianissimo, emotionally multifaceted in its expression of her musically-cast emotional state."

Christiane Franke, Klassik (March 2018)

"Cristina Pasaroiu, with her impeccably moulded soprano as Elisabetta, offers the greatest conceivable contrast to the boastful virility of the male protagonists through her sophisticated shaping. She portrays the queen, forced into marriage, as not only a visual doppelgänger of Melania Trump: an attractive young woman who is visibly disgusted by her clumsy, violent husband. Pasaroiu makes her voice sound almost cold towards him. Even towards Carlos, who is driven by his emotions, she shows contained feelings at most, in keeping with the role. In her captivating final appearance, she is finally able to musically prove the passionate side of her character. This is the most convincing single portrait of the evening in every respect."

Michael Demel, Der Opernfreund (March 2018)

Bizet CARMEN / Wiener Staatsoper

"Her clear soprano poured out like a string of pearls to weave the melodies of her arias of devotion and longing."

Ako Imamura, bachtrack (September 2016)

Verdi LA TRAVIATA / Opéra de Nice

"In the role of Violetta, Cristina Pasaroiu received a well-deserved standing ovation. She has an exceptional voice, which is warm, round and full ... the art with which she embodies and transfigures her character is all the more impressive."

Caroline Boudet-Lefort, Art Côte d’Azur (November 2015)
